 What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a therapy which aims to rebalance the receiver's vital energy (Ki) by means of physical manipulation, visualisation and stimulation of points on the body where the Ki is 'blocked', either in the sense of over-fullness or deficiency. Blockages or disharmonies of Ki are what cause imbalances and distress in the body, mind or emotions: they are, in effect, the roots of 'dis-ease'. Shiatsu aims to restore harmony and so promote well-being throughout the system.

This therapy, originally from Japan, uses the same concept of Ki as Acupuncture. However, unlike Acupuncture, Shiatsu does not involve needles! Instead the practitioner uses deep, gentle pressure to activate the points.

Shiatsu uses many of the same techniques as massage (such as stretches and rotations) as well as other methods for freeing-up and relaxing the body.

What are the benefits?

The more relaxed you are, the more easily and harmoniously your vital energy (Ki) will circulate and the better will be your health and emotional balance. This encourages healthier habits of diet, exercise and lifestyle as well as greater ease and peace of mind. Shiatsu is suitable for everyone, including babies, pregnant women, those recovering from surgery and the elderly. It is deeply relaxing, nurturing and re-energising on a physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual level.

What happens during a session?

Shiatsu sessions are usually carried out on a futon mat on the floor, but they can also be done on a treatment couch or seated, if necessary. The practitioner will use a variety of techniques (some in common with massage), including stretches, manipulation and pressure. It can be vigorously physical or more 'off body' depending on your needs.

To get the full benefit from Shiatsu, you need to be comfortable. Please note the following:

  • Do not have a heavy meal or consume alcohol for two hours before or after a treatment.

  • Wear non-restrictive, comfortable clothing such as tracksuit trousers, a T-shirt and clean socks. (There is no need to remove your clothing - Ki passes easily through fabric, especially natural fibres.)

How many treatments will I need?

Complementary therapy is not a 'quick fix' option - it is an ongoing process. However, you should be able to see significant changes in your health and well-being after about 7 sessions. This is the reasoning behind my scale of charges.

The first 7 sessions are crucial and should be taken at about weekly intervals, whenever possible. Thereafter they can stay weekly or have wider spaces between them, as appropriate.

Obviously, the longer you continue treatment, the more well-established will be changes for the better and the quicker your body will respond.

What do I need to do after a session?

It is generally a good idea to avoid strenuous activity for a couple of hours after treatment and to drink a glass of water to help the body detoxify itself. After a treatment you should feel fine and relaxed, but it is possible that you may experience a temporary worsening of symptoms. This is unlikely to last more than a few hours and is caused by the body eliminating toxins.

How does it work alongside conventional medicine?

Shiatsu is classed as a complementary therapy. It does not replace the care offered by your doctor, but can play a most helpful supporting role to many conventional treatments.

Session costs

Treatments usually last about an hour, although at the start of the first session the practitioner takes a detailed medical history.

This is to ensure that the treatment can be tailored to your specific needs.

When you have had 3x7 sessions, you will be invited to become a 'Faithful Client'.

Shiatsu helps a variety of problems of body, mind and spirit - everything from a bad back, digestive problems or poor energy levels to low mood, tiredness or spiritual discontent.

However, you do not have to be ill to benefit. Many people come for a Shiatsu treatment on an ongoing basis to help them relax and de-stress.
